Surge Protection

Surge protection has always played an important role in our designs. Over the years there’s been an increase in the number of power cuts to many of the areas in and around London. These often cause an electrical surge in your incoming power supply. This can, and often does, damage sensitive electronic devices, such as Crestron, Lutron and Control4.

A majority of the AV racks we’ve installed since 2008 will have some form of surge protection to protect the systems most essential and expensive items. If you have any doubts please get in touch at support@mdfx.co.uk.

A system that is unprotected can cost hundreds of pounds to repair. We strongly recommend installing the best quality surge protection suitable for your system. The system will then return to its normal operation once the power is re-applied.

In some recent cases, the power surge has been large enough to damage the surge protection device itself. This has meant replacing the surge protector. This is a far simpler and cheaper operation than say replacing the Crestron’s main processor.

We now have surge protectors available to us that no longer sacrifice themselves from SurgeX. These can receive a large surge and still return to normal after.

What to look for

To check if your MDFX system has a good level of surge protection you should look for a unit in the rack or AV cupboard with one of the following brand names:

  • Riello
  • Tripp Lite
  • Furman
  • SurgeX
  • Pakedge

If you have a system installed by others or you’re not sure what to look for, please send a photo of your setup to us at support@mdfx.co.uk and we’ll check it for you. You can also call us on 01895 262600.

To avoid any inconvenience or costs we are recommending that you check if they have at least some basic form of surge protection.

Insurance Claim

When acting quickly to these issues quickly, we’ve been able to provide insurance companies with everything they need to consider a claim. Many insurance companies have been fair and covered the costs in full. Sadly not every insurance company’s policy will offer the same cover.

If you’ve been affected by a power surge and need help, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
